Valley of the Butterflies

Valley of the Butterflies

Valley of the Butterflies (Petaloúdes), Rhodes, Greece

Nestled in the lush hills of Rhodes, the Valley of the Butterflies (Petaloúdes) is a magical natural paradise and one of the island’s most enchanting attractions. Every summer, thousands of Jersey Tiger Moths (Panaxia quadripunctaria) flock to this serene valley, drawn by the sweet scent of the Oriental Sweetgum trees. The result is a breathtaking spectacle—swarms of delicate butterflies resting on leaves, rocks, and streams, creating a living tapestry of color and movement.

Visitors can explore the valley via wooden walkways and stone paths, crossing charming bridges over small waterfalls and ponds. The tranquil atmosphere, combined with the soothing sound of running water, makes it a perfect escape from the summer heat. Along the way, you’ll encounter a small museum showcasing the butterfly’s life cycle and the valley’s ecosystem, as well as a 19th-century monastery dedicated to the Virgin Mary Kalopetra.

The best time to visit is between June and September, when the butterflies are most active. To preserve their habitat, visitors are asked to stay quiet and avoid disturbing them. Whether you're a nature lover, a photographer, or simply seeking a peaceful retreat, the Valley of the Butterflies offers a truly unforgettable experience.
