What to do in Rhodes in April
What to do in Rhodes in April
What’s Rhodes like in April?
April is the very start of Rhodes’ tourism season, when we begin to welcome visitors back to the island after winter. It’s becoming an increasingly popular time of year to visit: in April 2023 (the most recent year for published visitors by month), Rhodes received just under 150,000 tourists, a 30% increase on April 2022!
As we’ll see, there are plenty of reasons to visit Rhodes in April, making it unsurprising this is one of the months where we’ve seen the highest growth in visitors year-on-year.
What’s the climate like in Rhodes in April?
While Rhodes is significantly cooler in April than the peak temperatures in summer, the average temperature is still 18 degrees celsius, with 65% humidity. Although we do sometimes get downpours here in April, the average rainfall for the month is only 4mm - less than a tenth of what it is in London!
Benefits of visiting Rhodes in April over other times of year
As the very start of the tourist season, April will be the first time any new bars, cafes, restaurants and tourist attractions open - so you’ll be the first to try them! Similarly, many of the island’s tourist areas will use the winter off-season for maintenance and repairs, so Rhodes’ resorts and existing attractions will be looking the freshest they will all year.
While April’s becoming a more popular time to visit Rhodes, the visitor numbers are still far smaller than in the peak summer months - less than a third of in July and August. That means you can enjoy attractions like Lindos Acropolis, the Palace of the Grand Master of the Knights and the cobbled streets of Rhodes Old Town without queues - and find a parking space near the tourism hotspots easier! The lack of crowds also provides a more authentic experience and allows you to experience the island as locals do.
And it’s warm enough to make the most of our amazing choice of beaches but mild enough to be comfortable for those who want to avoid the sweltering weather of peak season when temperatures can exceed 30 degrees. While the sea will be colder than in summer, most visitors still find it’s warm enough to swim in.

April’s climate also makes it more comfortable to do the island’s more physically demanding attractions like climbing the steps to the Lindos Acropolis.
Finally, people love visiting Rhodes at this time of year because it offers a chance to see the spring flowers in bloom, including orchids, the Rhodes Peony and the Dragon Arum.
The island explodes with colour at this time of year - Rhodes resident Mariann Lipscei puts it more poetically than we could: “On Rhodes island, April and May are the two months when Mother Nature is singing her love songs through the blooming landscape.”

Events in Rhodes in April 2026
Greek Orthodox Easter
Greek Orthodox Easter falls on Sunday 12th April in 2026. It’s a very special time to visit the island as, like the rest of Greece, Easter is a major event for the people of Rhodes, and you’ll be able to see some beautiful traditions in the build-up to Easter.
From Good Monday to Good Wednesday, you’ll be able to smell koulourakia (Easter cookies baked using traditional wood-fired ovens). On Holy Thursday, locals dye eggs red, symbolizing the blood of Christ, but also joy.
On Good Friday evening, in the villages and Rhodes Old Town, Rhodes residents gather for epitaphios, a candlelit procession quietly following the epitaph through the streets. Holy Saturday sees kalafounoi, the lighting of bonfires in the villages. The Resurrection Service ends just before midnight, when the announcement of “Christ is Risen!” is met with fireworks and church bells - and tsougrisma, the tapping of the eggs against each other. The last person with an uncracked egg is the winner!
The celebrations continue on Easter Sunday and Easter Monday and are best enjoyed in villages like Agios Isidoros where traditions are still the strongest.
Rhodes Marathon
The Rhodes Marathon returns on the 26th April, featuring a full marathon, half-marathon and 10k and 5k races. Last year’s marathon attracted over 4,500 entries from 69 countries!
The marathon route starts and finishes in Eleftherias Square, which connects modern Rhodes to the Old Town.
Pavo Real Tango
If running isn’t your thing, how about another type of marathon? Inspired by the elegance of the peacock, Rhodes’ unofficial emblem, the Pavo Real Tango is a three-day “marathon/retreat” from 24th-26th April at the Rodos Palladium Hotel in Kallithea which will bring together hundreds of dancers to practice the tango to an array of DJs.
