Afandou - or Afantou - is a large traditional village on Rhodes’ east coast, south of Faliraki.
It’s popular for its beach, one of the longest on the island, which offers something for everyone with snorkeling and watersports but also untouched natural areas.
Like many parts of Rhodes, Afandou is full of character and history. The village is named after the Greek word “afandos”, meaning invisible, because it was carefully built to be hidden from pirate ships who wouldn’t be able to see it from the sea.
These days, it’s much happier to be seen and receive visitors, with a string of hotels and tavernas along the beachfront. Afandou is home to the only golf course on the island, making this a great base for golf lovers. If you’re an active outdoorsy type, it’s also close to hiking trails in the Psalidi Hills.
